Computer Science Superheroes

Hedy Lamarr

  Birth:November 9, 1914
  Death:January 19, 2000
  Major Academic Achivements:
She had a high school degree but no college degree, and instead pursued an acting carrier.
She did take some acting classes before starting. Before her major contribution, she
innovated on other items such as and improved tissue box and new traffic light.
  Major Contribution to Computer Science:
She and co-inventor George Antheli devised a way to create torpedos resistant to jamming that
would switch rapidly between frequencies to dodge jamming signals. Using her design, other
inventors were able to create other systems such as wifi and bluetooth.

Ada Lovelace

  Birth:December 18, 1815
  Death:November 27, 1852
  Major Academic Achivements:
She was educated by private tutors, self-educated, and was helped in her studies by
Agustus De Morgan, the first professor of mathematics at the University of London.
  Major Contribution to Computer Science:
Known for being the first computer programmer. She translated an article written
by an Italian engineer on the Babbage machine into English and added to the article,
hypothesizing that the machine could be programmed with more than numbers.

Guido Van Rossum

  Birth:January 31, 1956
  Death:n/a
  Major Academic Achivements:
Guido Van Rossum was born and grew up in the Netherlands. He graduated from the University of
Amsterdam in 1982 with a masters in computer science and mathematics.
  Major Contribution to Computer Science:
Guido Van Rossum invented a programming language from scratch called Python.
He designed it to be easy to learn and intuitive. His goal was for it to be as
“understandable as plain English”. While creating Python is considered his
greatest accomplishment, it is not the only thing Van Rossum has done to contribute
to the computer science community. He created an early web browser called
Grail and helped develop the ABC programming language.
